The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series
The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
