British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
