Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then located multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they commented.

City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.

A senior representative stated the incident left him stunned and had to be solved promptly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
